I've been thinking the site looks a little weedy, also it's in drastic need of some attention from yours truly. I noticed a few people are getting here from google, hello. A few people are getting here from www.ratatak.com , which is cool, if not regular. Anyway, the layout is fairly pansy-ish, and there isn't enough actual talking on here, which is what it was made for. I don't know if it should be a resource or, something but it'll be something. Gauranteed.
And the award goes to...
Sorry about the title, way too common. The mtv vma's and the kerrang! awards were on last Thursday, showing more of the attempted competition to MTV by kerrang, a competition they will of course lose, cause kerrang! has no content. I'm sticking a link to the mtv2 forum in the links section, it's none too shabby but it's very, very frantic. Don't expect to be returning to any threads you were taking part in after a day or two.
Righto, the mtv awards had the very predictable amount of cameos, dancing, moonmen, bullshit and the odd nugget of loveliness like the White Stripes and their three gongs (and Jack's suit). Of course the biggest news is the extra icy reception Eminem received from the fans, especially after insulting, and threatening Moby...then some fans. It all just goes to prove the point that poor old Eminem is really just a guy that can't stand the whole media deal. This doesn't make any less weird in an award show frequented by the meek Michael Jackson, the shy Britney Spears and the clan cut guys in nsync. Lets just say of them all the Eminem reality sitcom would be by far the worst, but of course, the most interesting.
The kerrang! awards on the other hand was a completely different kettle of fish. Compacted into a rough hour rather than the three hour behemoth with it's pre, post and fashion shows rounding down at a sleek sixish hours. There was a small (ish) budget, few awards, a few live performances and a fuckload of booze from what I could see and the high point of the evening not being a bad acceptance speech but Brian Molko flipping over a table, drawing attention from a security gaurd, who couldn't have given a shit who he was no doubt, then being referred to as the bald puffter out of placebo by Casey Chaos. Which was funny.
Har Har
Right, I bought a guitar, but not one from the list I was thinking of. I didn't buy any c.d.'s. And, I haven't put any content here since the beginning of time. I've had a weird few months, which you won't have heard of, seeing as I haven't posted a damn thing since July. Well, it's school time again, so, I'm back. Due to the limited social values I can take from the big grey building I'll be spending enough time online to be classed antisocial. I don't know about you, but I'm excited. (guffah!)
Aint money great?
Especially comin' up with ways to make it. Now, having money leads me into one of my favourite positions (cough) getting new c.d.'s. We're not talking about shitloads, but a fair amount of c.d.'s. The only thing is I don't know what to buy, I really don't know what I'm even looking for. I wouldn't mind a tool c.d. or two, and I know I'll be told I have to get them, after that there's the first two trail of dead albums, refused, amen, system of a down, metallica, slayer, soundtrack of our lives, and shitloads of others to be thinking about so I'm lost. I've also got my eyes on a new guitar so I'll have to be thinking about that. I ought to put a picture up soon of the guitar, I'll do it now in a sec actually. It's the 1963 epiphone firebird vii. A beautiful guitar if those customer comments were to be believed. I hear it's great, the only thing is I'm reluctant to buy online so I don't know if I should just buy here in Ireland and get ripped off.....
sounds like a plan to me anyway. I really wanna get a jazz box. You know, the overly big electro acoustics but I'd say it'd be a bit cumbersome...
Aw Poo
The rare occasion of me getting into a new band was dramatically faltered recently when I found out that the band in question, Refused, had broken up. Four years ago. I knew I was out of the loop but for fucks sake. I mean, come on.
...Trail of Dead
I fucking love them. I knew I would eventually but it's still pretty cool that I've found a band I can truly say I like, not just that but everything that I have heard that they have made I like. Which is nice. Oh and just in case you're foolish enough to have not gone to EVERY site on the Links page then, whether you like the band or not, you should definitely pay a visit to the trail of dead site. It's absolutely gorgeous, very nice indeed.
The Shame Page
What a fucking bollox idea was that, fucks sake. This is why I wanted someone to help me when I started the site cause I'm a fucking wank sometimes. I have to get someone to like clear all the ideas for the site or something so I don't make a tit of myself again. Well, as much of a tit.
The Name Page
I made a page, where I'm going to list EVERY person that is part of my life. However big their part. Only when they have an actual part though. It started off for the novelty of people being able to find the site by looking up their names.
R.H.C.P.
The release of the new chilli pepper's album seems to be fairly imminent as their new video is going into rotation on good ol' MTV2 this week with specials on Monday and Wednesday. By special I mean back to back to back, over and over and over. It looks really good and Frusciante grew his hair back!.
Also the weekend of the 15th and 16th is Muse weekend on MTV2 with a videography, documentary and a heap of live stuff. Same shows on both days though but that's a good thing. I suppose.
Sick-oh
---the text for this post has been erased on grounds of me being a prat---
Muse-Deadstar Muses new single was just on MTV2's most wanted chart at no.5. I hadn't heard it yet. It's kinda good. I'll have to hear it a few more times to make sure but it seemed like a step back for Muse. A lot simpler, no keyboard (thank god), a lot more garage than studio but it's still got that Bellamy wobble that irritates me so much. He'd be such a good vocalist otherwise. It is quite good though and I'm happy to hear 'em. I can't remember but I don't think there was a big show stopping solo. I think he got his confidence trimmed. Well after their fucking terrible version of "feeling good" I'd say it had been done already. The video for that song was shit.
Boxcar Racer- I feel so Yeah...one of the two Blink 182 spin off's release their deboo (debut) with their song "I feel so" and I don't wanna say what I fell like because I don't particularly like this. Anyway it's Tom de Longes and Travis Barker's attempt either to exclude Mark Hoppus, show that they're REAL musicians or show that there are too few drummers in the world. The guys had previously said that the spin-offs music had been influenced by Fugazi and Refused...two very good bands. For the first few seconds you could be forgiven for believing this but it instantly degrades into a less catchy version of "Stay Together For The Kids" and from there you just lose interest.
"The" Guitar
A friend of mine mentioned to me to take the "Electro-acoustic piece of crap" off the front page and I was like "No" and then he was like "Do" and then some time went by. Now we're here and I'm having an imaginary converstaion with the same friend and I'm like "How about I sporadically put up pictures of gorgeous guitars I want like a guitar of the week thing but not on a deadline" and he's like "Yeah, do it"...so I did.
How Things Change
I'm just watching an old MTV once off-er called "At home with the Chili Peppers" which was filmed just before the release of their album "One Hot Minute". The whole thing is quite cool, getting to see old videos and all. Especially the vid for "Warped", that vid is cool. The show was made when the band had no John Frusciante and had a Dave Navarro. I thought I should put this up because in the show their bassist "Flea" made a comment saying that Mr. Navarro was the best guitarist ever, which although possibly true goes against what he normally says about the almighty Frusciante. Well out of sight out of mind. I suppose he's perfect for where they were at the time. California.
American *Masked* Head Charge
O.k. sorry for the terrible name but I couldn' think of anything better. In the new American Head Charge vid "Just So You Know" there are certain scenes where their is a close up of their lead singer spliced with the face of Shaun Crahan the fluffy 'knotter also known as clown. Regardless, although it really does work I doubt this is just for effect. Does anyone know what the connection is. Answers to the regular address by which of course I mean www.ratatak.com . Put it in the music section cause no-one uses that that much. Oh and Kev if you're there I'm super sorry.
Lack Of Updates (Sowwy)
Yeah, I was starting to have my dreams spliced with visions of the site with low hits so I thought a break reminding me that it's just a pastime was important so now I can go back to updating all the time and really getting the word out there. Ratatak's been sending a lot of you here which is nice, I was in a bad mood though when I set up the fucking link so it's down as "some little bitch's site about music" I think and the "...trail of dead" website still hasn't gotten back to me though I haven't checked to see if I'm linked anyway. I would threaten to stop listening to "Source, tags and codes" but I'm not stupid (shut up!). Oh and yeah I wasn't gonna mention Lisa "Left-eye" Lopes but yeah, she died.
Ozzfest
Ozzfest is rolling it's huge rocking wheels into Ireland this summer and yours truly very well may be there. A friend of mine mentioned it to me and I think that the line up is good enough for me to go. I would really like to go see System of a Down and Slayer but the problem I've having is that they are only mentioning a few of the bands and I really wanna know who else is playing. There are supposed to be 16 bands playing and I only know about 6...I think. Also the tickets are a bit steep but I suppose they are putting on one mental show.
Speaking of Korn
I think I like Korn again. Which, as much as I hate to say it has so much to do with MTV2's Korn week I feel like crying. There's something about that "Somebody, Someone" song that really gets to me and Arfon, who by the way I've decided exists. Just so you know. I always hated "Issues" but now that I understand music, especially guitar more it seems to be more interesting. The whole music "thing". I fucking love it.
Layne Staley's dead
The "Alice in Chains" frontman was found dead in his home recently (not sure when). Police haven't released (to the best of my knowledge) the exact cause of death but a police man at the scene said it was either natural or an overdose. To be honest I thought he was ove drugs but it's definitely possible it could be that. He was only 34. Strangely it's only been a couple weeks since Kurt Cobain's 8th aniversary which is in early April (4th I think). This really sucks and I am pretty sad.
My Gift To You
That's what the deal is. I have fully fucked up the site by adding multimedia up to ying yang. Gotta say tripod is a fucking beast they have all the little niggly stuff right there for me all I have to do is add for them. I love this. So I'll be putting stuff in over the next while like search engines and stuff for you guys. And a web counter for me cause I'm like that.
Korn-Here to Stay
That is Korn's new video by the way which is getting heavy, heavy, HEAVY rotation on MTV2. I wrote a whole thing abot it for the essay section. Well, go on.
Weezer's "Dope Nose" Caught on Tape
By which of course I mean they're new vid is finished and can be seen at their great site www.weezer.com
Casey Chaos and the Search For The Golden Label
Amen frontman Casey Chaos has recently been speaking out about the real shitty behaviour of his label Virgin Records. Amen have spent the last age preparing their follow up to their debut album "Coma America". A lot of financial and personal sacrifices were made by the band to make the album that almost killed the band but at the end of the process unfortunately Virgin informed the band that they had no intention of releasing the record and if they wished to release through another label they would be required to cough up the production costs of $200,000. Chaos stated he had no clue on their motives saying that it's not like their Mariah Carey, to Virgin they're just a shitty punk band. Amen and Virgin had run into problems with each other in the past with Virgin withdrawing support on some concerts/tours at the last minute on more than one occasion. According to AMEN's site www.comaamerica.com they have now split quite amicably and are talking to other labels. Also, Rich Jones from the Black Halos has joined AMEN.
Rivers Cuomo hates his fans?
The Weezer frontman was recently interviewed for "Guitar Magazine" with topics covered including the band's forth attempt at world domination "Maladroit" and their seemingly not too far in the distance fifth attempt for which I know no title, which Rivers claims is almost ready and that he has written songs for it. A recurring theme in the interview was the problems Cuomo has noticed between him and his "fans" if that's a good name. He talked about the situation at some of their shows where the older fans are desperate to hear "Old Weezer" which would be their first and second albums. Cuomo says he made a concious decision to write pop-sensitive music as that is what he felt like doing, but feels that there is a feeling among the band's older fans that it is crap. Regardless, Cuomo says that with Maldroit and it's eventual successor that they are much heavier, very riff-orientated albums which should calm those demons. Also, Rivers controversially mentions his reluctance to meet fans due to their gimme gimme gimme attitudes, which I took as tongue in cheek humour but seems has either been misunderstood by myself or Weezer's legions of fans. A recent trip to the bands official posting boards showed a lot of miffed Weezer fans that instead of punching their pillows would vent their anger through the w.w.w. directed at everyones favourite asthmatic. If true it may make Cuomo a little less instantly likeable but in the end he is a MUSICIAN which is the reason you care anyway and he owes their fans nothing. Their music and the fact they tour is enough for me. And I'm smarter than you.
Wes Eats Day-Maybe not today, maybe 2003
Wes "I was in Limp Bizkit" Borland's new product "Eat the Day" seem to be coming along nicely, although I would be ecstatic with anything he comes up with because I have nothing but respect for the man who saw Limp Bizkit for what it was. Well, we all saw it, but he was in the fucking band. I'm especially happy that it was him that left the band seeing as he is (in the boy band tradition of labelling) "the talented one" as opposed to "the bald one", "the shifty one", "the old one" and "the one embarassed about his hair".
The line up of "Eat the Day" is completed by Wes' brother Scott and the bassist Greg Isabelle. They are in the middle of writing and recording stuff for pre-production in Los Angeles and their first cd should be out 2003.
Ooh, shite
Rock god Dave Mustaine of Megadeth and spectacular life fame, and the poncy kid in Siverchair (Daniel Johns) have both been hit with career threatening injuries. Mustaine has been diagnosed with having the scary fucking thing "radial neuropathy" which has completely fucked his left hand and means a couple of horrible things. Firstly he can't play guitar anymore and he has had to end the 19 year legend that has been Megadeth to an end. Johns has been diagnosed with reactive arthirits which I won't pretend to fully understand but regardless it means the baby-faced baby will have the Aussie crooners on hiatus. He is at the minute reliant on a walking stick. Silverchair's fourth album was released in Australia and New Zealand on April 1st. Megadeth's final release as far as is possible to know is a double live album "Rude Awakening" and is out now.
The Decline of KERRANG!
While browsing the April 13th issue of Kerrang! the English "metal" magazine I was a little perplexed by the voting on their 100th Coolest Stars poll. Such unbelievably different stars such as Fred Durst, Aaron "I'm one of the prats in STAIND" Lewis and three of the members of Sum 41, but also the veritable deitys Casey Chaos (AMEN), James Maynard Keenan (TOOL, A PEFRECT CIRCLE), Kurt Cobain (NIRVANA), Josh Homme and Nick Oliveiri (QOTSA), Rivers Cuomo (WEEZER) and Richie Edwards (ex-MANIC STREET PREACHERS). I'm lost. It just goes to prove even further that the much loathed "teeny boppers" of this world have been convinced of Rock's ability to make them cool thanks to more accesible bands in the world of Rock such as Limp Bizkit, Sum 41, Linkin Park, Blink 182, Papa Roach. I don't want to take anything away from these bands or anything and they have things to offer the world of music but in some cases the cons completely out weigh the pros. Especially when people on the level of brilliance as guitarist's like Tom Morello and James Iha and so many other cool people got replaced by the girl in Buffy and the Cartoon slut in their own comic strip. Fuck sake.
The Odd Couple
Ozzy "I'm a crazy bastard" Osbourne of Metal God fame has been invited to dinner in the White House on May 4th by President George W. Bush. The invitation came about as Mr. Bush is a big fan of the American t.v. show "The Osbournes" which is basically a docu-soap about Ozzy and his family. It seems the question on whether Bush was always a big fan of men and metal is now answered...think about it.
